For most of our lives, women are taught how to prepare for periods, pregnancy and motherhood.
But when menopause comes, the conversation suddenly becomes very small.
“Hot flashes.”
“Mood swings.”
“Weight gain.”
And then, this is normal, just manage it.
But think about it.
A woman may spend 30–35 years menstruating.
Then one day, her body starts changing again.
Her sleep may change.
Her digestion may change.
Her energy may dip.
Weight may settle differently.
Joints may feel different.
Strength may not feel the same.
And emotionally too, she may simply not feel like herself.
Yet she is expected to eat exactly the same way she did ten years ago.
That is the part I find strange.
We change food for every phase of life.
For a child, we think about growth.
During pregnancy, we think about nourishment.
After delivery, we think about recovery.
When someone is unwell, we immediately change their food.
But during menopause, we mostly change nothing.
Why?
Menopause should not be treated like a problem.
But it should also not be ignored.
This is a phase when a woman may need to become more conscious about:
Protein - because strength matters more.
Fibre - because digestion and weight matter more.
Better grains - because everyday food quality matters.
Good fats and seeds - because nourishment matters.
Digestive foods - because the gut may not behave exactly as it did earlier.
Anti-inflammatory foods - because stiffness, heaviness and general discomfort can become more noticeable.
Nothing fancy.
Nothing extreme.
Just better everyday food choices.
That is what made me think about menopause differently.
Maybe women don’t need another “diet.”
Maybe they need a better daily food routine designed for this phase of life.
Something practical.
Something Indian.
Something they can actually eat every day.
That thinking led us at JAAPA to bring together foods like:
Sattu for protein and fibre.
Barley and millets for everyday nourishment.
Shatavari and seeds for women-focused nutrition.
Vidaang, fennel, dill, ajwain and ginger for digestive comfort.
Lakadong turmeric for everyday inflammatory and antioxidant support.
Not medicines.
Not miracle claims.
Just food with a purpose.
A woman entering menopause may still have decades of active life ahead of her.
Those years are not an ending.
They are another beginning.
And they deserve the same care, thought and nourishment we give every other important chapter of a woman’s life.
